Immediate Action Requested: The 2017 Loft Law Clean Up Bill A8409 is in the Senate as Bill S6828!

Why this matters:

Imagine you could be evicted from your home for any of the following reasons:

  1. Your home of 20 years is not big enough to count as a home in the eyes of your elected representatives. Sorry, gotta go.
  2. Your windows to the street are set back from the facade of the building one foot or so and so you are told that what you see right in front of your eyes is not so: those windows are not windows. Nice try kid, see you later!
  3. Terrorists set up a bomb factory in your building, making the building unsafe at a certain point in time. Even should the terrorists be arrested and the factory dismantled, their illegality then is your problem now. Life ain’t fair buddy. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
  4. The owner of your building let his commercial tenants wantonly break the law with respect to fire codes, permits and the acquisition of necessary insurance, creating an unsafe situation in your building, again at a certain point in time. Just as with the terrorists, their illegality then is your problem now. You have to go. The kicker? The commercial tenants get to stay so long as they remedy the situation!

Now act! Now! (Please)

June 23 UPDATE

ASSEMBLY BILL A8409 PASSED ASSEMBLY!
NOW WE NEED TO BE LOUD NOW IN THE SENATE!

There’s been a new development – just when we thought our bill had passed the house only to die in the republican controlled senate as the legislative session ended, we managed to get a last minute bill introduction in the senate of a “same as” bill A8409. Senate Bill S6828

Not only that, but we have managed to secure sponsorship from NYC senators Dilan and Squadron (influential democrats) and, more importantly, senator Hamilton, a member of the republican friendly Independent Democratic Conference.

What that means is that it is suddenly quite possible our bill could get to the floor of the senate before the session ends. To maximize the chances of this happening we need to put in calls to democratic senators – both “real” democrats and IDC ones – and line up as many co sponsorships as possible. We also need to reach out to Senator Dilan and thank him for introducing bill S6828 and encourage him to keep working to keep loft tenants in their homes.

Some of us were in Albany and came back today but now driving up again! We going to need to be super loud now that we have some hope! Please note that all your previous calls/emails/faxes helped to passed A8409 in the Assembly! So yes your actions are super super influential!

EVEN IF YOU CONTACTED LEGISLATORS BELOW BEFORE PLEASE DO IT AGAIN WITH THE NEW MESSAGES BELOW:

Target #1:
Call + send an email and fax and tweet to Senator Dilan’s office:

Hello, my name is ________. I live in Zip Code________

I am calling to express my support for Senate Bill S6828, the Loft Law Clean-Up Bill. While I know Senator Dilan is not my representative [Or Senator Dilan IS my representative], I am calling because failure to pass bill S6828 will cause live-work tenants to lose their homes and workplaces this summer. A mere deadline extension (Bill # S6812) is NOT sufficient and will not spare tenants who are currently threatened with eviction due to the 2010 amendment exclusions. Please understand that [ I / my [enter relationship] lives in your d istrict and your sponsorship of this bill will affect my family/community] …

I strongly encourage Senator Dilan to continue his leadership as the sponsor of S6828. Please urge Senate Coalition Leader and Independent Democratic Conference Leader Senator Jeffrey D. Klein and Senate Majority Leader John J. Flanagan to support the bill S6828. If this bill doesn’t pass, many people will lose their homes! Thank you for your hard work! We are counting on Senator Dilan

Thank you so much.
